Not an April Fools’ Joke: Bored Ape Yacht Club Handles Discord Issue, Captcha Bot Reportedly Compromised

It’s April 1st – a day celebrated internationally by people who make practical jokes and have fun. In previous years, we’ve always dedicated a piece on something fun and whimsical to brighten the mood of our readers, but today, it’s important to remain careful.

The industry has changed a lot in the past year, and with the advent of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), scammers found a new niche to exploit.

Over the past month, we’ve all heard numerous stories of people losing their prized NFTs, including some that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, like the items from the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) collection.

If history is any indicator, chances are that scammers will take full advantage of the nature of today and try to lure many people into some “surprise sales” and whatnot. In fact, the Bored Ape Yacht Club’s official Twitter already carries a warning.

Bored Ape Yacht Club Sounds an Alarm

The official Twitter account behind BAYC warned its users today of a webhook in their Discord server that has been briefly compromised.

STAY SAFE. Do not mint anything from any Discord right now. A webhook in our Discord was briefly compromised. WE caught it immediately but please know: we are not doing any April Fools stealth mints / airdrops etc. Other Discords are also being attacked right now.

Indeed, many other Discord servers raised similar concerns. Although not directly hacked or breached, many teams made it explicitly clear that they haven’t planned anything for today and that everything alleging otherwise is a scam.

Discord Captcha Bot Supposedly Compromised

A large number of projects that have their communities active in Discord have sounded the alarm that the official Captcha Bot has been compromised.

Many allege that it has been hacked. It is a widely-used tool that, if you’ve used Discord regularly have likely stumbled upon at one point or another.

Most of the servers recommend deleting all authorizations associated with the Captcha Bot to be completely safe.

Once again, we urge our readers to remain extremely careful not only today but in general. Never trust unverified sources, especially on Discord. It’s highly advisable to turn off the DM function and make it so that you can only receive DMs from people who are already in your friend’s list.
