NFT Artist Beeple’s Twitter Account Hacked as Phishing Attacks Continue to Wreak Havoc

As part of yet another phishing attack, the Twitter account of prominent digital artist Mike Winkelmann, also known as Beeple, was hacked to promote a crypto scam.

Stay safe out there, anything too good to be true IS A F***ING SCAM,” tweeted the artist after regaining his account.

  • The hacked account featured a phishing link to a dubious website that pretended to be a “raffle” of Beeple’s collaboration with Louis Vuitton.
  • According to Harry Denley, a security expert at cryptocurrency wallet MetaMask, revealed that once users connect their wallets, one Ethereum gets automatically drained.
  • The malicious entities tweeted a second phishing domain. Denley called it a more “sophisticated scam that prompts users to send ETH to an EOA.
  • More than $71,000 of user funds have been drained in the attack.
  • Scam campaigns are common in the crypto realm, with bad actors typically leveraging the image of prominent individuals, such as Bill Gates, Richard Branson, Elon Musk, and Brad Garlinghouse, to offer “giveaways.”
  • In most cases, these entities lure the victims to send a small sum to receive a larger windfall and then abscond with their crypto funds.
  • Bleeping Computer recently revealed that threat actors are now using deep fake videos of Tesla Chief and other leading crypto proponents to promote a BitVex trading platform scam that siphons off deposited funds. The fraudulent trading platform claims to be spearheaded by Musk, who created the website to enable users to earn up to 30% returns on their crypto deposits.
