Bitcoin-Based Payment Facilitator Purse.io Shuts Down

After six years of service, Bitcoin-based Amazon payment facilitator, Purse.io, announced  that they are closing their business.

“We’ve made the very difficult decision to dissolve the company. We’re grateful for the opportunity afforded by our supporters to build products and infrastructure for the cryptocurrency community,” the company said in an April 16 statement.

A company helping Bitcoin’s adoption

As one of the first blockchain businesses of its kind, Purse.io came into the world in 2014, offering Amazon shoppers a discount for paying with Bitcoin.

The platform took parties interested in selling their Amazon gift cards and paired them with Bitcoin-wielding buyers, making discounts possible, according to the Purse.io site.

A difficult exit

After thanking the community, Purse.io detailed ongoing orders and withdrawals remain open until June 26, 2020. The site shut off its sign-up feature on April 16, barring any new members.

The site’s “shop and earn” features close on April 23. The platform will also terminate unmatched open orders with the entire outfit closing entirely on June 26.

At the statement’s end, the company said:

“It’s been a privilege serving people all around the world. We’re thankful for our customers who used purse.io increasing Bitcoin’s utility and distribution. We’re also thankful to all the developers and companies who continue to support open source projects including Bcoin and HSD. Thank you for helping us make crypto useful.”

Cointelegraph reached out to Purse.io for additional details, but received no response as of press time. This article will be updated accordingly should a response come in.
